Buffalo Bill Cultural Center, Oakley, Kansas

Join us April 13th at the Buffalo Bill Cultural Center in Oakley, Kansas for the debut of the Buffalo Bill “Dime Novel” Display on load from the Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave in Golden, Colorado. Curator Steve Friesen will be here at 1:00 p.m. to present the display and give a short talk. Steve is also the author of Buffalo Bill, Scout, Showman,Visionary and will be on hand to sign his book. The book is available for purchase in our gift shop, or bring along your copy.

“William F. Cody, the man, became Buffalo Bill, the superhero, in the nearly 2,000 dime novels published during and after his lifetime. As vividly illustrated on their covers, Buffalo Bill confronted ancient evils, unusual villains, and situations no ordinary mortal could manage. This helped lay the groundwork for Superman, Batman and many other superheroes that would come later.”

The promise that a community has ‘something for everyone’ has never been truer than it is in Salina the weekend of September 21-23! Salina AutumnFest is the name coined to encompass the many events that will coincide in Salina that weekend, including: Salina AMBUCs Oktoberfest; Bob Ardrey Marathon; German Car Show; Smoky Hill Museum Street Fair; PKM SteelDay; Community Showcase Concert; and Pro Roughstock Series World Finals Rodeo.

For example, a runner plans to compete in the marathon, but sees that there is also an Oktoberfest and Car Show in Oakdale Park, so her husband comes along; A SteelDay exhibitor plans his trip, sees there is a Street Fair and a Rodeo, and suddenly the kids want to come with Dad. When they see the Salina AutumnFest flyer, they’ll also discover BONUS opportunities that weekend, with performances of Les Miserables at Salina Community Theatre and Al Green in concert at the Stiefel Theatre. This is a BIG, BIG weekend!
